Continued

Well not too much to say today other than due to a planned and well needed sleep in I'm a bit short on time today!  Went sketching, painted, and now I'm on to working on some projects that I'm really excited about!  I also booked more days presenting at a school what it means to be an animator so I'm pretty excited about that.  Its really refreshing to work with kids and helps keeps things in perspective for me.

Hot Hot Heat

Today while I was drawing the outer casing of my pencil started melting in my hand!  Not sure if my hand was extra warm or......?  Weird...messy.  Either way I've been checking out a lot of Peter De Seve, and he is a big inspiration for me.  His drawings are so loose but his renderings are so geometrical that the finished product is so wonderful and real.

Everyday is exactly the same...almost

Since my contract ended everyday to me feels like a Saturday except Sunday.  Only Sunday feels like a Sunday.  Monday to Saturday all seem to have this busy energy to them.  People rushing about in the cold, grasping at their hoods and scarves to pull them tighter over wind chapped faces.  But Sunday always somehow, no matter what the weather, just seems so leisurely.  Older well off ladies striding side by side with their husbands or grown-up daughters.  Its really a lovely feeling watching and drawing people who are relaxed and just enjoying their day.  People wander in and out of the coffee shop that I sketch at, catching up with the barista or mulling over for minutes what they will order.  Usually its in and out with a large line up of good-natured but hurried faces.  I LOVE SUNDAYS!  4 pages today!

So I finished a sketchbook yesterday!  I haven't done that since college.  Anywho I went to this awesome film festival yesterday called Naked Frames and was really inspired by it.  There were really amazing films and I was totally impressed by the entire line up.  Made me feel sad that I never really did a short film. Today while I was drawing ( 4 pages today!) I got happy again because I feel like I'm really working towards something great.  I've set some goals for myself and I know that in the process of reaching them I will discover more things that I want to create so I feel pretty good about where I'm going.  Something really important that I have learned about life in general is that I really need to listen to myself about what I enjoy doing at the time and just go crazy on it.  I love drawing right now and I am discovering so much so I am going to keep pushing myself with it until I feel like I'm ready to accomplish something else.  I know one day I will feel ready to make a film, and it will be amazing.

Hey errands, how bout I kick you in the face with some ART!!!!

So I had a LOT of errands to run today and I was all bummed that I wouldn't have time to go sketching, but it turns I finished everything early enough to still have about 45 min of daylight left to sketch people!! Happy.
I got two pages in which is great, and I painted this guy cause I like his style.  Grey and Yellow?? YES!

BLERGALHOFF

Had a bit of an off painting/drawing day so far, but I still managed to do 3 pages.  I know that the worse thing I can do is let the ickiness slow me down.  So here are my efforts so far for today and on with my other illustrations!  I should have something exciting to post soon, so long as I can shake this yucky feeling.

What the What!

Today I sat down to do my usual sketching.  After finishing a page in my sketchbook (which usually means its time to pack up) I really felt like I wanted to draw more.  So long story short I ended up doing three pages!  Here is 1 of them plus a sketch I painted from another page.  After thinking about it I realized that this was not as weird as I thought it was.  When I go life drawing its for 3 hours at a time, and sometimes it takes about an hour or so to warm up.  Same thing happened today.  Just as I was finishing that first page I noticed that I was getting the best sketches.  Looks like its time to change my routine and aim for 2-3 pages a day.  I think I will get better drawings out this way.  HURRAH FOR DISCOVERY!

Gloomy Monday

Rain or snow or sunshine is always awesome because it changes the way people dress!  When I woke up and saw a cloudy rainy sky I got excited!  Umbrellas and raincoats and makeshift head coverings!

Sweet Sundays

Its rare that I am in Toronto on a Sunday morning, but today was a great day.  Not only was I down here enjoying a latte and a sketch on Bloor, but its also the day of the Santa Claus parade!  That means that I saw lots and lots of families all bundled up walking down Bloor to the parade!  Great opportunity to sketch kids which is something I don't get to do that often. Also today instead of doing gouache and ink I decided to try gouache and pencil crayon.  LOVING IT!  I think I will continue this way for a while.

Colours

I am trying to get away from rendering realistically and shifting my focus to colour.  So here is my foot! Colourful!

Timing is everything

Now that the weather has banished me from sketching outside I have to sketch inside.  This creates problems as I now have to get to my place of sketching (takeout/sit down food place) at a specific time.  Early enough so that I can get a seat but late enough that its just before the lunch crowd rush.  Today I got there too early and had little rotation of people to sketch from :(
Either way I will get it right, it just takes practice.
Now I'm off to paint my foot!

Did you hear what that dog just said?!

This is my TV best friend.  Cesar Millan (yes the dog whisperer).  TV just had a marathon of his show and this guy is f'n amazing!  I feel like I learned equally as much about humans as I did dogs.  It really gave me a lot of insight into why people do the things they do and as an animator and improviser that information is invaluable.  THANKS BUD!

ALSO his face is endearingly asymmetrical.

outifts! and SCULPTURES

Today I decided to start drawing the clothing/body before the face.  I like the way it forced me to put more time and thought into clothing which is something i'm working on.  I think I will continue to draw this way for the next few weeks.  And I meant to bring some pencil crayons today but I totally forgot! oh well, TOMORROW!

oh and also here are some pictures of an old sculpture I made out of wax.  I want to start sculpting in wax and again but I'm kinda scared of burning the place down...but I'll probably still do it anyways!

good morning

Started my day off right with an early morning sketch session.  I'm trying to get the whole body in now and not just faces, I'm finding it easier every day to get down more details as people rush by me on their way to work.  I may gouache some of these later....

No more big hair days....

I just cut my hair SHORT, but I started this before I
cut it... so thanks for all the good times long hair!  This ones for you...

sketchy sketchy

My new favorite thing to do is wake up and get a latte and just sit out on bloor and draw.  The people walking by quickly challenge me to only take down important lines but it also allows me to be creative and make stuff up if I just didn't catch someones face in time.  Plus I get to enjoy what little good weather we have until the inevitable snow....

WHEW!!

So I'm on a bit of a break from work which has finally given me a chance to work on some of my own just for fun projects!!  Here is what my bedroom floor looks like:

AWESOME!!!  I have missed drawing and painting!!  I'm trying to really focus on understanding colour now that I have some time....I cleaned up the lines for my "Big Hair Day" illustration and now i'm trying to find a colour combination that is juuuuuuust right!
Can't wait to make this one a final!! Its one of my favorite illustrations!
